I’MMA Liking UFC : Matt Hamill
I first heard of MMA some ten years ago, give or take. My son was into MMA, he’d watch it on TV and sometimes get together with his friends whom all would chip in for pay-per-view Ultimate Fighters. I remembered watching a few fights and thought how hard core it was! It’s nothing like wrestling, which can be boring or exciting depending where the action is heading. I was a wrestling mom for a while when my kid was younger. So, I know wrestling. I’ve enjoyed boxing, Mike Tyson was one my favorites. My boys used to be into Ninja Turtles, so I have been exposed to all that Karate, Judo kicking action.
Over the years, I’ve picked up on more of UFC via a friend or two online, and I’ve come to like the sport, it grew on me. It’s more of a true sport than anything else. Fight of the fittest of some sort, if you will. And, the game is pretty exciting and keeps me on my toes, if you know what I mean.
So, when I had decided to head out to Deaf Nation Expo recently, I found out Matt Hamill was going to be there. He was also going to be one of the event on the stage that day too. I missed the event, but was told he explained how he got into UFC. Apparently Matt was a bouncer of some sort at some sort of bar or club somewhere in the USA. And, when he took control of some sort of wild situation and had to throw some dude out into the street, he impressed someone. This someone, possibly from UFC or some fighters approached him and told him he should go out to California and get into UFC Fight Night. The rest is history.
I have a picture of Matt, with a short note written to me and signed by him, which I had gotten from Deaf Expo when I met him in person. I had the picture copied and left it around the house. See, I know my boys. They will take the original and have it framed and call it theirs. So, I did the smartest thing and made a few copies and stored the original in a safe place. It just so happens that one of the copies was pinned up in my son’s room. Several of his friends have approached me wanted to know where I met him. None of them knew he was deaf. They pretty much said he didn’t sound deaf, not to their recollection when they heard him spoke after the fights. So, I’ve been getting a lot of interest in Matt by these guys. They like him and said he is a good fighter. Had I known these guys wanted to see Matt, I’d have taken these guys along with my son to Deaf Expo and then have a good time in Chicago before heading back home. I’ve known these guys since they were in kindergarten.
I’ve seen Matt fight once. I thought he was pretty good. He’s got potential.
Meeting Matt in person was a nice experience. He was personable, very friendly and accommodating. He offered free pictures taken with anyone with their own cameras or the option to purchase a photograph of him with his autograph with or without a T-shirt. I had asked him about the movie and he said to look for it to be out in April. He relayed to me as well to everyone that came to his booth to catch him on TV and gather up friends to watch him fight. He’s all hyped up for that fight, I could tell on that day I saw him. He was really psyched. It was all he could talk about, most.
His next fight is going to be on December 5th, 2009 at Las Vegas fighting Jon Jones at The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale. You can catch him on Spike TV channel.
You can be sure, I am going to be watching that fight.
